A Summary of Stellite Products for Wood Cutting

Lumberyard with piles of trees

The Problem

Saw tip design and material selection is one of the most influential factors in the efficiency and operating cost of a saw mill.  The cutting edge of a saw tip can be subject to a number of cutting conditions which have a serious effect on the reliability of a blade including: wood abrasiveness, cutting forces, temperature, corrosion, and heat. There is also the problem of tramp materials (ie bullets, nails, etc) found in trees which, in addition to causing abrasion, can apply unacceptable shock loads to normal saw teeth.

To meet the arduous working conditions, the teeth of a saw blade used in the timber industry typically have the following properties:

  1. The ability to maintain a keen cutting edge at the high temperatures created by friction heat
  2. Good resistance to abrasion
  3. Good resistance to corrosion
  4. Good resistance to shock loading

The Solutions

For more than 70 years, the Stellite family of alloys & products has been relied on by the timber & wood cutting industry for some of the most aggressive cutting environments. Saw tips made from Stellite provide saw mill operators with a variety of benefits like longer working periods between resharpening, improved dimensional accuracy & product quality, strong bonding to the steel blade, easy tip repair & re-sharpening, elimination of tip hardening or heat-treatment, and excellent corrosion resistance across a variety of timber species.

Stellite Alloys

The Stellite family of cobalt base alloys consist of complex carbides in an alloy matrix. They are resistant to wear, galling and corrosion and retain these properties at high temperatures. Their exceptional wear resistance is due mainly to the unique inherent characteristics of the hard carbide phase dispersed in a CoCr alloy matrix.

For saw tips, the most widely used alloys for saw tipping are Stellite 12, Stellite 1 and Stellite 13. Each of these alloys have their own characteristics and the performance depends not only on their chemical compositions but also how they are applied on the sawblade.

Products

Saw tipping methods for Stellite can be put in two categories. The first category referred to as “Weld Deposition” involves the complete melting and solidification to form the saw tips or to hardface the cutting edge of the tip. The second category referred to as simply “Tipping” involves joining preformed teeth onto a sawblade by resistance welding or brazing.
